Advisement Procedures
advisement

Before registering for specific courses, you must see an advisor. At this meeting, you will discuss course options, prerequisites, major requirements, general education requirements, and academic progress. Your advisor will endeavor to help you meet your individual needs and time schedule prior to arranging a definite program. You will work with your advisor in an atmosphere of partnership. It is critical to make an early appointment for academic advisement if you wish to build a schedule which reflects your needs.

Registration: After you have met with your advisor to select classes, the registration process will secure your enrollment in specific course sections. If you are a student who is new to the University, your academic advisor will register you via computer, and you will leave the office with your schedule of classes in hand. Subsequent registration may be advisor-aided, or you may register by touch-tone UNILINK System. With touch-tone, you may use the telephone to process your own registration at your convenience. Students on academic probation will not be allowed to register themselves.

Placement for Math Courses: Several Math courses at SIUC require that the student take a placement test as a prerequisite. Currently we are using the COMPASS test created by the ACT. Practice problems can be found there. Students can also get help from the Math Department's Online Course Review Materials.

Add/Drop: After your registration has been processed, you will have the opportunity to make changes in your schedule. If you wish to drop a course, add a course, or change a section, you must do so in an official manner. Check the Advisement Calendar for deadline dates. (The schedule change process begins with your academic advisor.)

Withdrawal: If you have officially registered for classes and find you are unable or unwilling to attend or complete the semester (prior to week 8), you must OFFICIALLY withdraw. Simply leaving school does not constitute a withdrawal. Discussion of procedures may be found in the SIUC Undergraduate Catalog, or you may discuss your options with your advisor. The Office of Transitional Programs, located in Woody Hall, Room B145, (6l8-536-2338) handles this process.
